Important reminders/updates

Good afternoon Year 13,

I hope you've all been enjoying the glorious weather and making the most of the sunshine. This blog has a few important reminders for you.

1. Your A Levels
Mr Gower has written to you regarding the upcoming generation of centre assessment grades. You can read his letter here.

2. Student finance
If you are going to University this year, it is important that, if you have not already done so, you apply online for student finance ASAP. It does not matter if you are not 100% on where you are going or if you change your mind later on as you are able to make changes online.

It is very straight forward to apply and you can do so here.

If you would like more information or have any questions then please feel free to email me or Mrs Elmer (selmer@salesian.surrey.sch.uk).

There is also a free webinar being run by the University of Kent on 13th May on the finance system, how to apply, and what you'll be expected to pay back. This is also a great opportunity to find out more about scholarships, bursaries, and additional support universities can provide. You are able to sign up to the session here. Alternatively, you can access the webinar from YouTube after 13th May here.

In addition, there is some useful information regarding Student Finance and Covid 19, particularly if you are struggling to send off evidence etc. here.

3. What should you be doing now? (from Mrs Bolton's email)
For those of you who have applied to University:

1. Have a read through of the content for Year 1 (for both your firm and insurance choices) - create a RAG system - are there any topics that you feel you could research before starting in September? Could you consolidate any of your A Level work in line with any of the topics?
2. Contact your firm and insurance Universities and request a reading list - this is a great way to demonstrate your interest and independence, two qualities that are sought after in further education....
3. If you are able to make a start on your reading - take notes (I would recommend using the Cornell note taking system - concise note taking practice)
4. Create a glossary of key terms for each unit that you may be studying.
5. If you are unable to make a start on the suggested reading lists or perhaps don’t hear back from the Admissions teams, take a look at some related MOOCS (Massive Open Online Courses). Future
Learn has a wide array available and many are recommended by Universities applied to by our students (https://www.futurelearn.com/)

For those of you entering into the World of Work:

This is obviously a very strange time to be entering into the workplace.
1. Spend some time taking a look at your CV - are there any updates needed?
2. Consider the skills you have developed over the last two years - how will they help you to secure your position?
3. Download some frequently asked interview questions. How confidently can you answer these? - now would be the ideal time to consider your answers and perhaps work on the questions that you struggle to answer.
4. Contact Mrs Hawkins if you have any queries or need any additional guidance (jhawkins@salesian.surrey.sch.uk)

I hope the above suggestions prove useful. I look forward to hearing from you via your tutors/teachers in the weeks to come!

4. Salesian Challenge
Yesterday marked the official start of our first ever 'Salesian 7 Challenge'. The aim of the competition is for pupils and staff alike to attempt to complete all 7 challenges, before the 15th May to put you in with a chance of winning some of the many prizes on offer.

Thank you so much to those who've emailed me to give me an update on what they've been up to. Please continue to update me. As I said before, I really do love to hear from you.

You should be hearing from your tutors next week as there will be another round of phone calls home.

Missing you all.

Mrs Clarke x
